MOGADISHU – A group of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Hiran region in the Federal Government of Somalia’s House of the People convened for a press conference in Mogadishu. They voiced their support for recently-dismissed Hiran Governor Ali Jeyte Osman and protested the decision made by HirShabelle President Ali Gudlawe.

MP Abdimakil Ibrahim Abdalla, expressing dissatisfaction with the HirShabelle state, declared, “HirShabelle exists only in name, but not in a practical sense. We were patient, hoping that it might function properly given time. But today, it was the last nail in the coffin – there is no HirShabelle.” Abdalla further emphasized that the people he represents in the FGS Parliament will no longer recognize HirShabelle statehood.

Another representative from the Hiran region, MP Mohamed Abduqadir Mohamed, passionately spoke about the aspirations of Hiran’s people. He said, “For over 50 years, our people had the vision to become a state and to reach where other states have reached. Today is the day that the people of Hiran can become a state.” Mohamed stressed that they attempted to make HirShabelle work, but President Ali Gudlawe’s actions have unfortunately caused problems.

This significant development underlines an intensifying political crisis within the region, which could profoundly impact the unity and functioning of the Federal Government of Somalia. This situation necessitates ongoing, close monitoring and careful resolution to prevent further discord and potential instability.
