SSC-Khaatumo released injured prisoners of war (POW) on humanitarian grounds. In a commendable display of humanity and adherence to international norms, the SSC-Khaatumo administration announced on Monday evening the release of two POWs whom the SSC forces captured during the battle at Gooja’adde.

Las Anod, Sool region, SSC, SOMALIA. By Jama:

“SSC-Khaatumo Administration informs all interested parties that we are releasing two detainees captured on August 25 during the war between SSC forces and the Somaliland militias. The two detainees are critically injured, and we have agreed to hand them over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on humanitarian grounds, ensuring they get the best care available,” said a statement the administration issued late Monday.

The administration further emphasized its commitment to treating prisoners of war in full compliance with international humanitarian law and Somali customs. They expressed their deep appreciation for the crucial role the ICRC played in facilitating the safe transfer of these detainees.

A remarkable gesture

The decision to release the injured prisoners demonstrates a remarkable level of maturity and compassion, setting a precedent rarely seen in similar situations in Somalia. It is worth noting that the Somaliland authorities, who have detained SSC-Khaatumo fighters, have not taken such steps in the past.

The ICRC has officially confirmed its role in facilitating the transfer of the two detainees from Las Anod to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, in a humanitarian mission.

Samer Jarjouhi, responsible for overseeing ICRC programs in Somalia and personally present during the operation, stated, “The wounded will be able to receive specialized treatment and be with their loved ones. We hope that this operation continues to build trust between the Red Cross and both Somaliland and SSC Khaatumo.”

The operation marks a significant step towards providing medical attention and care for those affected by the conflict, reflecting a commitment to humanitarian principles in the region.
