Nairobi, KENYA — MP Abdullahi Adan Kulane, more commonly referred to as Kulane Jiis, boldly accused leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and the House of the People’s leadership of intentionally thwarting MP Marwa Abdi Bashir’s chance at the presidency of the Inter-Parliament Union (IPU).

Outspoken Claims of Political Manipulation

During the discussions in Nairobi, MP. Kulane, an influential member of the Somali Parliament’s House of the People, openly voiced his dissatisfaction with Hon. Marwa Abdi Bashir’s recent defeat in her quest for the IPU presidency. He blamed the top officials and the leadership of the parliament for having a direct hand in her campaign’s derailment.

Pointing Fingers at the Top Echelons

Kulane Jiis confronted Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and the Speaker of the House of the People, Hon. Adan Madobe, directly, suggesting they played a part in thwarting Hon. Marwa’s campaign. “It’s bewildering,” he declared with force, “to see parliamentary leaders first back Hon. Marwa Abdi Bashir, then turn around and send a damaging letter about her to the IPU. It makes no sense for our government to not stand by one of its own in such an important international competition,” he stated with precision. Following this assertion, he openly challenged the consistency of their support, highlighting an act of betrayal that contradicted the expected unity in foreign affairs.

Moreover, Kulane pinpointed the troubling overlap between the legislative and executive powers, noting the frequent failure to implement parliamentary decisions. As a result, he called for those at the top of parliament to be held responsible and insisted on firm measures to prevent repeats of such situations. He urged the enforcement of democratic principles, demanding that parliamentary resolutions translate into definitive action.

In his concluding remarks, MP Kulane Jiis emphasized the necessity of confronting this issue head-on to prevent such occurrences in the future, thereby securing the interests of future Somali candidates on the international stage.

Repercussions in the Political Sphere

The allegations by MP Kulane Jiis surfaced in the wake of the exposure of a letter to the IPU, allegedly from the Speaker of the House of the People, which falsely stated that Hon. Marwa had withdrawn from the contest, consequently, contributing to her loss. This revelation has ignited significant discussions about the internal political dynamics within Somalia’s government structures and the repercussions these may have on the country’s international representation.
