Angola, officially the Republic of Angola, is a significant presence on the west-central coast of Southern Africa. With a population of approximately 37.3 million as of 2023, the nation has a diverse ethnic makeup, with the Ovimbundu, Ambundu, and Bakongo being prominent groups. Portuguese serves as the official language, while various national languages, including Kimbundu and Umbundu, reflect the country’s rich cultural tapestry.
Angola’s history is marked by Portuguese colonization, which began in the 16th century, shaping the nation into its current form. Gaining independence on November 11, 1975, Angola faced immediate challenges with a civil war erupting the same year. The conflict involved the ruling MPLA, backed by the Soviet Union, facing off against UNITA, supported by the United States and South Africa, as well as the FNLA, backed by Zaire. Despite the war officially concluding in 2002, its impact reverberates in the country’s socio-political landscape.
In terms of governance, Angola operates as a unitary parliamentary republic, led by President João Lourenço and Vice President Esperança da Costa. The National Assembly serves as the legislative body. Economically, Angola faces disparities, with a GDP (PPP) of $260.323 billion and a nominal GDP of $93.796 billion in 2023. Income inequality, as indicated by a Gini coefficient of 51.3, remains a challenge. The country’s Human Development Index (HDI) for 2021 stands at 0.588, categorized as medium.
Despite historical challenges, Angola has emerged as a relatively stable constitutional republic post-2002, working towards socio-economic development and stability.
Post the civil war’s conclusion in 2002, Angola has made strides towards stability and development. The government, led by the MPLA, has focused on rebuilding infrastructure, fostering economic growth, and addressing social challenges. The nation’s vast natural resources, including oil and diamonds, play a crucial role in its economic landscape.
