2 children were killed after touching unexploded ammunition detonated in the Gooja’ade area near Las Anod earlier today. The kids reportedly touched an unexploded ordnance (UXO) left in the area after a bloody conflict between SSC forces and the Somaliland army.

Las Anod, SSC, SOMALIA. By Yahya:

The blast left two other children seriously injured. They are now receiving medical treatment at Las Anod Manhal Hospital. The Somali Digest confirmed the tragic event, including the condition of the injured kids, with reliable local sources.

Unexploded ordnance refers to explosive remnants of war, such as shells, grenades, bombs, land mines or cluster munitions, that did not explode when employed. They still pose a risk of detonation, sometimes spanning decades since they were used in the conflict. Accidental explosions occur, often, sadly, with fatal consequences.

Gooja’adde

On the morning of 25 August, pictures and videos emerged on social media, showing SSC-Khaatumo fighters capturing Somaliland soldiers and their critical Gooja’adde base. Other photos displayed the base’s interior, including a medical facility, proving that the SSC-Khaatumo forces successfully overtook it.

The capture of Gooja’adde was the most significant blow to the self-proclaimed government in Hargeisa since the conflict for the disputed city of Las Anod started. The outpost has been a crucial strategic base for Somaliland forces from where they waged a brutal war on Las Anod since February.

Somaliland’s atrocities in Las Anod

Since February 2023, Somaliland’s frequent shelling killed hundreds of people and displaced at least 200,000. It frequently targeted the city’s civilian objects, such as Las Anod’s hospitals. The waves of shelling also killed several prominent figures.

On 16 August, the Somaliland army’s bombardment killed a prominent Somali poet, Jama Kediye. The tragic incident came only days after Somaliland killed another prominent elder. Indiscriminate shelling hit a residence adjacent to Faayow Hospital and a small tea shop. The bombardment claimed the life of a revered 85-year-old elder, Jama Digale.
