Mohamoud Hashi Abdi, a prominent politician and head of a political organization, has made a surprising statement, saying the key to peace for the ongoing conflict in Sool is in Las Anod, Garowe, and other cities in Puntland. Mr Hashi’s remarks surprised many, given his previously hawkish stance on the Las Anod conflict.
Hargeisa, Somaliland, SOMALIA. By Dalmar:
The former Minister of Civil Aviation and Air Transport of Somaliland, as well as a former Minister of Presidency, conveyed his current perspective during a recent address, stating, “Dear friends, the key to peace is in Las Anod, Garowe, Bosaso, and Galkayo. It is not in Burao [Burco], Berbera, Hargeisa, or Borama. There are two keys in your hands: one of conflict and one of peace. It is not appropriate to confuse the two keys. It is appropriate to use the key of peace.”
He further called upon scholars and intellectuals to play a pivotal role in conflict resolution, saying, “It is not appropriate at this stage to be ruled by one unit [protesters and youth of Las Anod]. We will not achieve peace if they are in control.”
Regardless of the gathering of fighters in Oog
Moreover, Mr Hashi highlighted, “There was a time when the key to peace was in Somaliland, but unfortunately, it is no longer there.” This part of his comments notably raised eyebrows to many, as Somaliland is the one who currently mobilizes recruits in Oog. These soldiers intend to launch a counterattack against the SSC-Khaatumo forces and expand their control over territories and populations opposed to Somaliland’s rule.
SSC-Khaatumo leaders had previously ordered their forces, following their victory over Somaliland troops in Gooja’adde on 25 August, not to enter areas inhabited by the Isaaq clan. SSC-Khaatumo President recently warned the neighbouring clans that if any bullet originates from their areas and targets the SSC territories, these clans will become legitimate targets. “I am calling on the neighbouring clans. If yesterday you were saying it was the [Somaliland] authorities who were fighting [against us], this authority has now left.” President Firdhiye asserted that SSC defeated Somaliland, not the ‘people of Somaliland’.
Mr Hashi’s call for peace carries a poignant message, urging restraint and dialogue to end the conflict in Sool. However, his appeal should primarily address his community and the Somaliland troops who have been reportedly gathering in Oog. If another round of aggression starts, it will be initiated by these troops.
