On Tuesday, an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion killed two al-Shabaab logisticians when the device they were assembling detonated in Amuma, Kenya’s Garissa County. The blast occurred as these individuals were planting the IED on the primary supply route. An unspecified number of other militants, possibly injured, remain at large.

Responding security teams discovered the badly mutilated and scattered bodies of the two terrorists. The event serves as a concerning indicator that the terrorist organization is actively attempting to deploy IEDs in Northeastern Kenya following a significant decline in attacks during September.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) labelled the incident as ‘karma’, emphasizing that the militants targeted innocent civilians and police officers when their device unexpectedly exploded. According to the DCI, border patrol officers found human remains consisting of battered flesh and remnants of the explosive device at the scene.

“Scattered limbs, fragments of the human digestive system, and tattered pieces of the militia’s fatigues littered the area, illustrating the devastating impact of the explosion,” noted the DCI. Additionally, the scene yielded a battery and wires – most likely components of the explosive device.

Decline in al-Shabaab’s activities

Detectives have launched a manhunt for the possibly injured militants in response to the incident, intensifying efforts to ensure the region’s security. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges the security forces in the region face when countering terrorist threats.

It occurs amid a significant decrease in al-Shabaab’s activity in Garissa and other Northeastern counties. While from June to August, Kenya saw a sharp increase in terrorist violence, a relatively calm September is a success of tightened security measures and improved intelligence sharing between security agencies and the local populace.

Al-Shabaab’s recent violence focused mainly on Lamu County, with one of the latest attacks taking place on 19 September. Suspected al-Shabaab militants killed one person and destroyed several homes.
