Yesterday, in the early morning, a deadly mortar strike hit the house of Mohamed Kerow Mohamed, a member of the House of People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia. His residence is located in the Dabakin neighbourhood of Mogadishu’s Dharkenley district. Mr Mohamed represents the Southwest State in the Parliament of Somalia.

A reliable source informed the Somali Digest that the attack resulted in the deaths of one of the children and a nephew of the prominent politician. Moreover, the MP’s house sustained significant damage. Although the militant group al-Shabaab often targets the capital city with mortars or rockets, the perpetrator of this strike remains unknown. No one has claimed responsibility for the atrocity. Additionally, there have been no updates from the security forces or the Dharkenley district administration.

It is the second time within ten days that Dharkenley was targeted. On 1 October, al-Shabaab shelled Mogadishu with mortars and rockets. The series of strikes apart from Dharkenley targeted the Wadajir and Kahda districts, as well as Camp TURKSOM. The bombardment that struck the Tarabushka Kawo Godey area in Dharkenley reportedly resulted in deaths, injuries, and extensive damage. Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for this attack.

Recent violence in Mogadishu

In recent months, Mogadishu has faced a surge in al-Shabaab’s attacks. Only three days ago, a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) targeted a police commander‘s vehicle along the road connecting the San’a (Sanca) and Fagah junctions.

The vehicle was passing through the SISI area when the IED detonated. The driver was the deputy police commander of the Abdiaziz district, Abdiraman Ali Raage. Following the incident, the police officers swiftly arrived at the scene and assisted the injured deputy commander and other affected personnel.

The attack highlighted the ongoing security challenges in Mogadishu and the risks law enforcement officers encounter in the line of duty. The use of both mortars and roadside IEDs poses a significant threat to the people’s safety and the region’s security.
