Fighters from the Islamic State in Somalia (IS-Somalia) launched a coordinated attack on Puntland forces stationed in Dharjaale, Bari region, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the regional government and the extremist group. The attack, which involved two suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (SVBIEDs) and eight attackers, four of whom detonated person-borne IEDs (PB-IEDs) within the camp, resulted in the deaths of some Puntland soldiers and the destruction of two food trucks.
The attack, which took place at approximately 4:30 am local time, demonstrated the increasing sophistication and boldness of IS-Somalia’s tactics. According to initial reports, the attackers, who were identified as being of Ethiopian and Yemeni origin, managed to breach the perimeter of the camp, destroy two food trucks, and detonate their explosives before being neutralized by the defending forces.

The attack in Dharjaale is the latest in a series of incidents that have underscored the growing threat posed by IS-Somalia to the stability and security of the Puntland region. It comes in response to Puntland’s declared campaign against IS-Somalia on Thursday. Unlike its more established rival, Al-Shabab, which has focused primarily on domestic targets and objectives, IS-Somalia has sought to position itself as a transnational movement with links to the wider global jihadist network. This has been reflected in the group’s propaganda and recruitment efforts, which have increasingly sought to attract foreign fighters from the region and beyond.
