Fighters from the Islamic State in Somalia (IS-Somalia) launched a coordinated attack on Puntland forces stationed in Dharjaale, Bari region, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the regional government and the extremist group. The attack, which involved two suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (SVBIEDs) and eight attackers, four of whom detonated person-borne IEDs (PB-IEDs) within the camp, resulted in the deaths of some Puntland soldiers and the destruction of two food trucks.

The attack, which took place at approximately 4:30 am local time, demonstrated the increasing sophistication and boldness of IS-Somalia’s tactics. According to initial reports, the attackers, who were identified as being of Ethiopian and Yemeni origin, managed to breach the perimeter of the camp, destroy two food trucks, and detonate their explosives before being neutralized by the defending forces.

The Threat of IS-Somalia

The attack in Dharjaale is the latest in a series of incidents that have underscored the growing threat posed by IS-Somalia to the stability and security of the Puntland region. It comes in response to Puntland’s declared campaign against IS-Somalia on Thursday. The group, which is an offshoot of the larger Islamic State (IS) organization, has been active in Somalia since 2015 and has been steadily expanding its presence and influence in the country’s northeastern regions.

Unlike its more established rival, Al-Shabab, which has focused primarily on domestic targets and objectives, IS-Somalia has sought to position itself as a transnational movement with links to the wider global jihadist network. This has been reflected in the group’s propaganda and recruitment efforts, which have increasingly sought to attract foreign fighters from the region and beyond.

The presence of Ethiopian and Yemeni fighters among the attackers in Dharjaale is a testament to the success of these efforts and highlights the challenges facing Puntland authorities in countering the group’s appeal and reach. It also underscores the need for greater regional cooperation and intelligence sharing to disrupt cross-border networks and prevent the influx of foreign fighters into the region.

Puntland’s Swift Response

In the wake of the attack, Puntland forces wasted no time in launching a counteroffensive against IS-Somalia positions in the nearby Al-Miskad mountains. The operation, which involved a combination of ground troops and air support, aimed to disrupt the group’s operational capabilities and degrade its ability to launch further attacks on Puntland forces and civilians.

The swift response by Puntland authorities is a testament to the region’s growing military capabilities and its determination to confront the threat posed by extremist groups head-on. In recent years, the Puntland government has invested heavily in building up its security forces, with a particular focus on counter-terrorism operations and border security.
