The ATMIS withdrawal from Somalia in June is a vital step in stabilizing the region. It involves 2000 soldiers from Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Burundi, aligning with UN Security Council Resolutions 2628, 2670, and 2687, showing a commitment to restoring stability and sovereignty.
Chaired by ATMIS Force Commander Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, the four-day meeting in Mogadishu showcased collaborative efforts among contributing countries. Discussions covered the general security situation, the persistent threat of Al-Shabaab, and resolutions to enhance sector commanders’ capabilities.
The withdrawal’s success depends on evaluating its initial phase impact and planning subsequent operations carefully. As the international community supports Somalia’s journey towards self-reliance, ATMIS withdrawal marks a crucial milestone in collectively pursuing a stable and secure Somalia. The handover of six Forward Operating Bases empowers local authorities to take control.
