President Deni’s speech champions the democratic goals of Puntland. Said Abdullahi Deni, the President of Puntland, delivered a speech yesterday, discussing the importance of one-person, one-vote elections and emphasising the need to return power to the people. He highlighted that stakeholders have agreed upon this principle since the formation of Puntland, as the region’s constitution and the national convention from 1998 state.

Garowe, Puntland, SOMALIA.

President Deni emphasized that the rule of a few and oppression cannot succeed, and it is essential to empower the people through democratic processes. He announced that Puntland is now entering a period of elections based on the one-person, one-vote principle. The President mentioned that local elections have already taken place in 33 districts. The upcoming vote will involve the elections of 66 representatives, as well as the President and Vice President of Puntland. “It is not a challenge for us. We are ready,” President Deni assured.

Criticism of Mogadishu

The President questioned the Federal Government of Somalia’s (FGS) lack of appreciation for Puntland’s efforts in holding one-person, one-vote elections despite the peaceful environment in the region. He criticized the federal government’s opposition to conducting one-person, one-vote elections in Puntland while simultaneously pressuring other Federal Member States (FMS) to hold such elections, even in areas facing political instability, insecurity, and other challenges.

President Deni expressed disappointment that the federal government did not acknowledge Puntland’s significant work on local elections and instead seemed to favour Puntland’s collapse. He highlighted the disparity in treatment. Other regions of Somalia are denied the opportunity to return to previous election methods. In contrast, Puntland, which is peaceful and stable, is denied the chance to hold one-person, one-vote elections. He called on the FGS, the President of Somalia, and the Prime Minister to address this inconsistency in their approach.

On opposition and SSC-Khaatumo

The President’s speech countered the claims of the Puntland opposition, which alleged that the Puntland government was seeking a term extension. Mr Deni addressed the long-awaited concerns and countered the opposition’s narrative, reaffirming his commitment to democratic processes.

Finally, addressing the issue of SSC-Khaatumo, the President expressed his support for their decision to establish their own administration. He assured them of their rights and representation within the Puntland government during the two-year period in which they will be forming their administration. President Deni emphasized that Puntland stands by the people of SSC and their clan elders, providing them with all necessary support.
