The President of Puntland, Said Abdullahi Deni, attended a ceremony where he passed the baton of the Puntland derwish army command to Brigadier General Adan Abdi Hashi. The event took place yesterday at the headquarters of the derwish army in the 54th camp. During the ceremony, General Hashi assumed the commander’s position.

President Deni emphasised the government’s commitment to the construction and reform of the Puntland derwish forces. He highlighted the significant progress in enhancing the defence capabilities and overall development of the army command and the improvements in the hierarchy and command structure.

Numerous government legislators, executives, members of the derwish army command, Police Force command, Nugaal State Administration, and other security officials attended the event. The presence of these dignitaries underscored the importance of the ceremony. It demonstrated unified support for the Puntland’s security forces.

Strengthening Puntland’s security

President Deni appointed the new commander and a deputy commander, General Abdirahman Mohamed Jama ‘Ilig’, last week, based on Article 80 of the Puntland constitution. The appointments signify President Deni’s commitment to strengthening and organising the derwish forces. Deni has recognised the importance of a well-trained and equipped regional force. He demonstrates his government’s dedication to utilising its military resources effectively.

The commander and 2nd deputy commander have extensive expertise in the military. Under their leadership, the Puntland derwish forces will continue enhancing their capabilities. Moreover, they are expected to contribute to the security of Puntland and support the overall development of the region.

Experienced leadership in turbulent times

President Deni’s changes in Puntland’s derwish forces leadership occur in the context of looming presidential and parliamentary elections. As the events in the past showed, elements of Puntland’s opposition might try to disown the people’s will and attempt to influence the political situation illegally by force.

Earlier this month, Aran Jaan leader Mohamud Shide came out against democratisation in Puntland. During a consultative meeting of Puntland opposition groups in Garowe, the founder of the controversial group made remarks that further fueled the people’s discontent with the association. Shide stated that no one can support the ongoing democratisation in Puntland. He claimed the current election process fails to provide a platform for participation, neither for international organisations nor local ones. He boldly declared that the time for democracy in Puntland was over.

In June, the Aran Jaan group launched an attack on the Puntland Parliament. It came after its failed attempt to incite civil unrest. Thankfully, the government forces defended the MPs and the city of Garowe against the militia, which eventually had to withdraw from Garowe.

President Deni’s recent appointments of the new army commanders are a clear sign of strengthening the state forces and ensuring that Puntland is well-prepared to face anyone who might try to incite violence.
