Mogadishu, SOMALIA – The Aran Jaan group is currently in Mogadishu seeking funding from the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to support their destabilizing activities in Puntland, a region that has been making significant strides in democratic progress and stability. This collusion not only undermines Puntland’s efforts but also raises serious questions about President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s commitment to democracy and his true intentions behind the proposed constitutional amendments.

The Aran Jaan group, known for their opposition to direct elections in Puntland, has been implicated in the pre-election violence and the prevention of direct elections in three districts of the region. Their actions have forced the Puntland government to resort to indirect elections for the presidency, a move that goes against the principles of democratic representation and the will of the people.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s Divisive Tactics and Anti-Democratic Agenda

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s personal opposition to Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni and his apparent willingness to destabilize the region raise serious concerns about his commitment to democracy and national unity. The FGS’s alleged support for the Aran Jaan group’s destabilizing activities in Puntland appears to be part of a larger strategy to keep the region preoccupied with internal conflicts, preventing it from effectively participating in federal politics.

This divisive approach seems to be aimed at creating a conducive environment for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to push through his controversial constitutional amendments, which many view as a means to secure an illegal extension of his term in office. By keeping Puntland distracted and destabilized, the FGS hopes to minimize opposition to these amendments and consolidate its power at the expense of democratic principles and the autonomy of federal member states.

The FGS’s actions not only undermine Puntland’s democratic progress but also jeopardize the stability and unity of the entire nation. By prioritizing personal political ambitions over the well-being of the Somali people, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud risks plunging the country into a cycle of conflict and instability, eroding the trust and confidence of the international community in Somalia’s democratic future.

Puntland’s Focus on Development and Stability

In sharp contrast to the FGS’s destabilizing efforts, the Puntland government has remained focused on its own development and the well-being of its people. The recent three-day retreat by Puntland’s ministers and director generals, aimed at reviewing the progress and challenges of the past five years and planning for the next five years, is a testament to the region’s commitment to good governance and sustainable development.

Puntland’s ability to maintain stability and make progress on key developmental issues, despite the challenges posed by the Aran Jaan group and the FGS’s interference, is a result of the region’s strong democratic foundations and the legitimacy of its government. The Puntland administration’s focus on service delivery, economic growth, and security has earned it the trust and support of its people, enabling it to withstand external pressures and maintain its autonomy.

The international community must recognize and support Puntland’s efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions and promote sustainable development. By providing targeted assistance and diplomatic support, the international community can help Puntland to build resilience against destabilizing forces and serve as a model for other regions in Somalia.
