Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni today laid the foundation stone for what is set to become the largest hospital in the country. The International Health System (IHS) hospital, a project spearheaded by a private Somali company, represents a major step forward in the development of Somalia’s healthcare infrastructure and a testament to the resilience, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit of the Somali people.
President Deni’s brief but impactful visit to the state capital, Garowe, to attend the foundation laying ceremony underscores the importance his government places on balancing security imperatives with the need for sustained investments in social and economic development. The President took time out of his busy schedule, particularly amidst the ongoing Hilac campaign against terrorists in the Bari region, to send a message about his commitment to improving the lives and well-being of the people of Puntland and Somalia as a whole.
A Call for Unity
Speaking at the event, President Deni delivered a poignant and timely message, calling on the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to fulfill its role in uniting the country and working towards the common good of all Somalis. He specifically urged the FGS to refrain from destabilizing federal member states, as it has been doing in Jubaland, and instead focus on building a more inclusive and representative political system that can meet the needs and aspirations of all Somalis, regardless of their regional or clan affiliation.
The President’s remarks come at a time of heightened tensions between the FGS and some federal member states, particularly Jubaland, where the central government has of interefered in local politics and undermined the authority of regional leaders. These tensions have raised concerns about the future of Somalia’s federal system and the prospects for long-term peace and stability in the country, as well as the ability of the government to effectively address the many challenges facing the Somali people, including poverty, insecurity, and lack of access to basic services such as healthcare and education.
President Deni’s call for unity and stability is a reminder of the need for all Somali stakeholders to work together towards the common goal of building a more prosperous and secure future for the country. By prioritizing the needs and aspirations of the Somali people over narrow political interests, and by investing in critical social and economic infrastructure such as healthcare and education, Somalia can lay the foundations for a brighter and more hopeful future, one in which all citizens have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
Balancing Security and Development
As President Deni returns to Bosaso to oversee the ongoing Hilac campaign against terrorists in the Bari region, he will undoubtedly be mindful of the need to balance security imperatives with the broader goals of social and economic development. The Hilac campaign, which involves thousands of troops from the Puntland Defense Forces, Puntland Maritime Police Force, and the Puntland CT Police, aims to dislodge Al-Shabab and ISIS-affiliated militants from their strongholds in the Bari region and restore peace and stability to the area.
The success of the Hilac campaign is critical for the security of Puntland and the wider region, as the presence of terrorist groups in the area has long been a source of instability and a threat to the lives and livelihoods of local communities. By taking decisive action to eliminate these threats and create a more secure environment, the Puntland government is laying the groundwork for long-term peace and prosperity in the region.
At the same time, President Deni’s visit to Garowe and his attendance at the foundation laying ceremony for the IHS hospital underscores the importance of balancing security efforts with investments in social and economic development. By prioritizing projects that can improve the lives of ordinary Somalis, such as healthcare facilities, schools, and infrastructure, the government builds trust and legitimacy with local communities and creates a more stable and prosperous future for all.
