The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamza Abdi Barre, urges the public to take rain and flood warnings seriously. The Prime Minister recently visited the headquarters of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA) to assess the country’s preparedness for potential rain and flood-related disasters. During his inspection, the Prime Minister engaged with SODMA’s experts, emphasizing the importance of intensified efforts in disaster management to mitigate the potential impact on the Somali people.

Mogadishu, SOMALIA.

Scientific forecasts have indicated an increased risk of flooding due to anticipated heavy rains in various parts of the country. Prime Minister Hamza highlighted this concern. He stressed the need for proactive measures to prevent severe problems and protect the population from the consequences of weather events.

“There is a risk of flooding due to the rains that will fall in the country. According to scientific forecasts, these heavy rains can cause damage in parts of the country,” said the Prime Minister. In particular, he warned individuals residing along rivers, who face a high risk of severe flooding. He urged them to stay away from river banks and low-lying areas to ensure their safety and well-being.

Prime Minister Hamza also called upon aid agencies operating in Somalia to collaborate closely with SODMA to jointly prepare for the impending disasters. This coordinated effort between the government and aid agencies will enhance disaster response capabilities and provide more effective and timely assistance to affected communities.

Importance of preparedness

The Prime Minister’s visit to SODMA reflects the government’s commitment to disaster management and underscores the importance of preparedness. By urging the public to take the warnings seriously and emphasizing collaborative efforts with aid agencies, the Prime Minister aims to ensure the safety and welfare of the Somali people during this critical period.

As the country braces for the anticipated rains and potential flooding, individuals, communities, and relevant authorities need to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and cooperate with disaster management agencies to minimize the adverse impacts of these weather events. Ongoing monitoring and preparedness efforts will be crucial in safeguarding lives and mitigating the potential damage to infrastructure and livelihoods.
