The Darawish Movement: A Fight for Somali Independence (1899-1920)

Darawish Movement, spanning 1899 to 1920, emerged as a powerful force under the leadership of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, also known as Sayyid Mohamed. A charismatic Sufi poet and religious leader,  because he rallied Somalis around the ideals of religious reform, anti-colonialism, and the establishment of an independent Somali state.

Fighting for Freedom:

Driven by resentment towards British and Italian colonial encroachment, the darawish mobilized against foreign powers. They established their own administration, the darawish State, imposing strict Islamic law and building a disciplined military force. This resistance movement engaged in numerous battles, inflicting significant losses on colonial troops and capturing strategic towns.

A Complex Legacy:

Despite their initial successes, the darawish ultimately faced defeat due to superior firepower and internal divisions. Sayyid Mohamed died in 1920, marking the end of the movement’s organized struggle. While the Dervishes failed to achieve their dream of complete independence, their legacy remains. They are celebrated as pioneers of Somali nationalism, showcasing the spirit of resistance against colonial domination.

The darawish Movement left a lasting impact on Somali society and culture. Their emphasis on religious revival and pan-Somali unity continues to resonate. Sayyid Mohamed’s poems and writings are revered as literary masterpieces, preserving the movement’s ideals and the fight for self-determination.
