Darawish Movement, spanning 1899 to 1920, emerged as a powerful force under the leadership of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, also known as Sayyid Mohamed. A charismatic Sufi poet and religious leader, because he rallied Somalis around the ideals of religious reform, anti-colonialism, and the establishment of an independent Somali state.

They established their own administration, the darawish State, imposing strict Islamic law and building a disciplined military force.
