During the past week, 30 houses were burnt down in Kenya’s Mandera County inter-clan fighting. The Degodia and Murule clans clashed over control of a shared slaughter site in Rhamu, near the Ethiopian border. Tensions flared, leading to retaliatory attacks, arrests, and widespread devastation. Thankfully, peace negotiations have commenced.

Rhamu, Mandera County, KENYA. By Yahya:

Disputes frequently occur in the region over grazing lands, food resources, watering holes, and, such as in this instance, a slaughter site. The area has been grappling with the lasting impact of this recent violence, forcing residents from both sides to flee their homes for safety.

Last week, the two groups fought over a site they use for slaughtering their animals. The clashes led to each of them raiding the farms of the other while setting houses on fire. Although no casualties have been reported to date, the actions of these armed individuals prompted a multi-agency response.

Peace talks ongoing

Most recently, the longstanding feud between the Degodia and Murule took a promising step toward reconciliation. Representatives from both communities, including esteemed elders, convened in Rhamu town together with government officials on Thursday. They unanimously agreed to an immediate cessation of hostilities, marking a hopeful turning point for the development of peaceful relations.

The accord emphasizes not just peace but also government enforcement of law and order. A 10-member peace committee, comprising members from the Gurreh, Degodia, and Murule communities, should ensure the agreement’s integrity.

When addressing the gathering, Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif urged unity and peaceful coexistence. He reaffirmed the county administration’s commitment to fostering harmony. “I am deeply grateful for the unity and collaboration displayed by our community leaders and stakeholders today. Your unwavering commitment to the well-being and peace of Mandera County is truly commendable. Together, we can build a stronger and more harmonious community. Thank you all for your invaluable support and dedication,” said Khalif.
