Puntland forces have captured the strategic village of Turmasaale, located at the mouth of the Togga Jeceel valley. The successful operation, which involved heavy fighting and the use of technicals with mounted machine guns and cannon, has dealt a major blow to the Islamic State in Somalia’s (IS-Somalia aka ISIS) defensive positions in the area and has opened up new opportunities for Puntland forces to advance and clear the remaining strongholds of the extremist group.

According to military sources, the capture of Turmasaale is a key milestone in the Hilac Campaign, as it denies ISIS access to a critical supply route and staging area for attacks on Puntland forces and civilian targets. The village, which sits at the entrance to the Togga Jeceel valley, had been heavily fortified by ISIS fighters, who had dug trenches and tunnels and deployed a range of weapons and explosives to defend the area.

However, despite the challenging terrain and the determined resistance of the ISIS fighters, Puntland forces were able to break through the defenses and secure the village, thanks in part to their superior firepower and mobility. The use of technicals with mounted machine guns and cannon proved particularly effective in the operation, allowing Puntland forces to provide cover fire and suppress ISIS positions while infantry units advanced on foot.

The Strategic Importance of Togga Jeceel

The capture of Turmasaale and the access it provides to the Togga Jeceel valley is a significant strategic gain for Puntland forces, as it opens up new opportunities to target ISIS positions and supply lines in the area. The valley, which runs northwest from the village, is a key terrain feature that has long been used by ISIS as a safe haven and a base of operations for attacks on Puntland forces and civilian targets.

According to intelligence reports, ISIS has heavily fortified its positions in the northwest part of the valley, using the natural cover provided by the steep slopes and rocky outcroppings to build a network of bunkers, tunnels, and firing positions. The group has also deployed a range of heavy weapons and explosives in the area, including machine guns, mortars, drones, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), making it a formidable obstacle for any advancing force.

However, the capture of Turmasaale and the deployment of technicals with mounted weapons has significantly shifted the balance of power in favor of Puntland forces. With the ability to bring heavy firepower to bear on ISIS positions from a distance, and to rapidly maneuver and redeploy forces as needed, Puntland commanders now have a much greater range of options for attacking and clearing the remaining ISIS strongholds in the valley.
