Nestled in Somaliland’s Togdheer region, Burco stands resilient, intricately woven into the nation’s history. As the second capital during the establishment of the Republic of Somaliland, Burco symbolizes endurance and cultural richness.
Burco’s unique geography is highlighted by its division into two parts during rainfall, connected by the New Bridge and the Deero Bridge. Beyond physical connections, these bridges embody Burao’s adaptability to natural surroundings, bridging historical legacies with present progress.
An early pioneer in Burao’s architectural history, Hajji Ahmed Yusuf (Qulumbr) constructed the city’s first stone house. A member of the Siciid Ismaciil sub-clan, his legacy testifies to Burco’s early roots and the fusion of tradition with architectural innovation.
In 1900, British forces razed Burao to the ground. Furthermore like a phoenix, Burco rose from the ashes, rebuilding and establishing a modern settlement in 1910. This resilience is etched into the city’s historical fabric, marking its ability to overcome challenges.
