Dhuusamareeb, Galmudug’s capital, is at the heart of a security dilemma. The city holds undeniable strategic importance in the broader conflict against al-Shabaab. However, recent security concerns have come to the forefront, catalyzed by the public comments of the Minister of Education of Galmudug, Mr Mohamed Dore.

Dhuusamareeb, Galmudug, SOMALIA. By Kheyr:

“In the heart of Dhuusamareeb, stone and iron barriers are strewn, especially along the main city road,” the Minister stated on Facebook (screenshotted above), drawing attention to potential impediments to essential medical access. “It’s imperative to prioritize the well-being of Dhuusamareeb’s residents and to strategically deploy our military forces in areas critical to city security.”

After consultations with government officials, Mr Dore swiftly retracted his comments, emphasizing, “It is not my intention to provide fodder to al-Shabaab or to sow discord.”

But beneath the surface of these retractions lies a growing tension. Reports of frontline breakdowns and potential mutinies among the forces hint at deeper security and trust issues. While public sentiment has largely supported government efforts, emerging scepticism among the clans indicates shifting dynamics within the region.

Galmudug at a pivotal moment

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s prolonged stay in Dhuusamareeb, which has seen its fair share of al-Shabaab-initiated attacks, is an attempt to steady the ship and galvanize forces against the extremist group. However, the erosion of the frontline during his presence has further exacerbated doubts about the government’s strategic capabilities.

With Dhuusamareeb standing as a beacon, Galmudug is at a pivotal moment. The intertwined challenges of maintaining unity among the clans, bolstering frontline defence, and presenting a solid front against al-Shabaab are now at the heart of the region’s strategic imperatives.

As Galmudug navigates this tumultuous period, its success hinges not just on military prowess but also on effectively consolidating internal trust, fostering unity among disparate clans, and cultivating a shared vision of resilience against external threats.
