The Puntland Electoral Commission (PEC) has made key announcements that heighten anticipation for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. Last night, the PEC unveiled its definitive schedule for the electoral process, delineating specific plans for the elections and urging relevant authorities to hasten the implementation of essential regulations.

The Commission’s statement focuses on two pivotal developments. Firstly, in an effort to streamline the electoral process and ensure a cohesive approach, the Commission has decided to simultaneously hold elections for the President, Vice President, and the House of Representatives, as stipulated in the Puntland constitution.

Secondly, PEC has released an exhaustive schedule that will guide electoral activities leading up to the highly-anticipated voting day, slated for 25 February 2024. This thorough planning allows for the elections to unfold within a strategically designed four-month timeframe.

In addition, the Commission has issued an explicit call to Puntland’s House of Representatives and the Cabinet to expedite the finalization and implementation of the draft rules vital for the elections. The importance of political parties preparing for these landmark elections has also been underscored, and civil society organizations are being urged to play a collaborative role in educating the public about the electoral process.

Furthermore, the Commission has encouraged all stakeholders to work in concert to resolve any technical issues that may arise, thus ensuring the smooth conduct of the elections.

Date: 25 February 2024

The Commission’s meticulous planning has culminated in the creation of a comprehensive roadmap, which demonstrates its readiness to administer the elections within a short span of four months. This detailed timetable is particularly noteworthy, given the immense complexities involved in organizing democratic elections. The Commission, operating as an independent body, has pinpointed 25 February 2024 as the day when Puntlanders will go to the polls.

This upcoming election holds historical significance for Puntland, marking the first time since 1998 that its citizens will have the opportunity to directly elect their President, Vice President, and House of Representatives. The release of PEC’s election schedule is an enormous stride in Puntland’s democratic journey. The stage is now set for a transparent and inclusive electoral process, one that promises to galvanize citizen participation and bolster democratic institutions within the region.
