Respected clan elder and former Mayor of Mogadishu passed away

Respected clan elder and former Mayor of Mogadishu, Ali Ugas Abdulle, passed away yesterday in Digfer Hospital. He held several prominent government positions, particularly during the 1980s, and was the father of the current Mudulood clan leader, Ugas Mohamed Ali Ugas. Ali Ugas Abdulle has been ill for some time.

Notable Somali government officials, including the Prime Minister and the incumbent Mayor of Banadir Regional Administration, attended Mr Abdulle’s funeral. The Prime Minister highlighted the deceased’s unwavering dedication and love for his country, emphasizing his loyal service to the nation. He offered prayers for the departed soul’s eternal rest.

Ali Ugas Abdulle served as the Mayor of Mogadishu from 1987 to 1990, during the military-led central government. He later assumed the role of the country’s Ambassador to Italy in 2005. Additionally, he held the position of Ugas, a traditional leadership role within the Mudulood clan family, before passing the mantle to his son.

Condolences from Hassan Sheikh and other dignitaries

The passing of the former Mayor of Mogadishu was formally announced by his family on Monday morning, following his recent hospitalization. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, along with other political leaders, conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Ali Ugas. They extended their sympathies, particularly to Ugas Mohamud Ali Ugas, the leader of the Mudulood community, and the entire Somali populace.

The President acknowledged Ali Ugas Abdulle’s longstanding dedication to serving the Somali people, especially during the nation’s tumultuous periods. He characterized Ali Ugas Abdulle as a seasoned statesman and a prominent advocate for peace, reconciliation, and the well-being of the Somali population.

Numerous other dignitaries, among them the present Mayor of Mogadishu, Yusuf Hussein Jimale ‘Madale’, and the former Prime Minister of Somalia, Hassan Ali Kheyre, expressed their condolences at Abdulle’s passing. Madale lauded the late individual’s significant contributions, highlighting his pivotal role in fostering peace, uniting the Somali nation, and revitalizing the Somali government.
